Longevity and Lifetime Labor Input : Data and Implications ∗

چکیده

The Ben-Porath (1967) model suggests that a rise in life expectancy, and the associated rise in the lifetime labor input, brings about a rise in investment in human capital. We incorporate the leisure decision into the model and develop a necessary condition regarding the lifetime labor input for the Ben-Porath mechanism to have a positive effect on investment in human capital. We show that this condition does not hold for American men born between 1840 and 1970. The data suggest similar patterns in Western Europe. JEL Classification: E20, J22, J24, J26, O11.

Structural Equations Modeling of Hidden Genetic Constructs of Production, Reproduction and Longevity in Holstein Cows in Iran

In structural equation modeling, it is possible to create hidden variables that cannot be directly measured by the researcher. The aim of this study was to model the structural equations of hidden genetic constructs of production, reproduction and longevity of Holstein dairy cows in Iran using breeding value of the traits that make up these constructs. Accordingly, the breeding value of th...

Musculoskeletal Disorders, Energy Use, and Costs of Human Labor for Paddy Cultivation in Northern Iran

In this study, musculoskeletal disorders, energy consumption and input costs of paddy labors have been studied in cultivation, crop protection, and harvesting rice in Northern Iran, Guilan province. The sample size of the study consisted of 74 paddy workers of the study region. The data were collected through Nordic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that the la...

Joint Alpharma-Beef Species Symposium: implications of beef heifer development systems and lifetime productivity.

Research emphasis has been placed on heifer development strategies in recent years, comparing traditional, more intensive systems to more extensive systems using less feed and relying on compensatory gain to reach a target BW. Recent research has indicated that developing heifers to a lighter target BW at breeding (i.e., 50 to 57% of mature BW compared with 60 to 65% BW) reduced development cos...

Longevity in cheetahs: the key to success?

An understanding of the factors governing reproductive success has fundamental implications for population demography, conservation, selection and adaptation. Although a consistent positive correlation between lifetime reproductive success and longevity has been reported for many iteroparous organisms, few studies have explored how longevity influences annual individual performance. In this stu...
